What is Panchakarma

PANCHAKARMA

Ayurvedic Panchakarma is a detoxification and rejuvenation program providing long-lasting benefits. Panchakarma is the penultimate healing experience uniting the mind and body while strengthening the immune system, restoring balance, and overall wellbeing.

Ayurveda defines optimum health as a body with ideal organ function, free and clear of toxins. A healthy person has a mind at peace with calm, happy emotions. Panchakarma is recommended any time an individual experiences illness, as well as when they’re feeling somewhat out-of-balance.

Panchakarma in Sanskrit means ‘five actions’. This refers to the five treatments that are integral to the Ayurvedic process of body purification. This process is used to cleanse the body of toxic materials that are residual derivatives of disease, poor nutrition, and other circumstances. Our bodies possess and innate ability to effectively remove these waste materials. However, with an individual’s poor dietary choice, lack of proper fitness or exercise, lifestyle, and genetics, comes disorganization of the digestive and hormonal system occurs. This situation causes the accumulation and propagation of toxins throughout the body and results in disease. This waste material is known as ama and is a sticky, foul-smelling, and harmful substance.

What are Doshas?

Each person’s body is unique in shape and form. Each with their own individual blueprint acting as a map of the body comprised of an infinite variety of shapes, behaviors, or emotions. Doshas are the manifestation of three specific energies that circulate through the body. How these doshas become apparent, and in what proportion, is part of what makes everyone unique.

Doshas can be ever-changing, dynamically responding to weather and stress. The habits that you form as an individual, are manifestations of your dosha. The 3 doshas are:

  • Pitta – This fiery and intense dosha type may enjoy the occasional power trip, or have a ravenous insatiable hunger.
  • Vata – This dosha is never warm. They nibble, graze, or snack their way throughout the day and feel the need for frequent rest. They are also prone to talking about a diverse range of topics, and frequently repeating themselves.
  • Kapha – This contented dosha will spend their time curled up on the couch offering uplifting advice to loved ones.

The Five Actions

The five actions comprising Panchakarma are the Vamana (emesis), Virechana (purgation), Vasti (enema), Nasya (nasal administration), and Rakta Mokshana (blood-letting). Depending on an individual’s specific imbalance, one or more of these therapies can be utilized in treatment.

When ama accumulates in the body, it begins to block the flow of energy, information, and nourishment to your system.  In Ayurvedic medicine, the build-up of toxins is the underlying cause of all disease. A common example of the accumulation of toxins refers to saturated fats and cholesterol that is beyond the body’s ability to metabolize. This leads to a blocking of blood vessels and arteries, inevitably leading to a heart condition.

It is important to remember that your body is digesting more than food. Your mind, as well as your heart,  are continuously digesting energy and information. Even as you read this, your mind is breaking down the ideas on this page into components that your mind is able to absorb and understand. In a similar fashion, you emotional Agni is responsible for processing life experiences and emotions. The smile of someone you’re interested in, the excitement of a prospective relationship, or unexpected criticism are all examples of emotional processes.
